On 29th October 1999, Captain Steve Waugh sent a fax to the Captain John Eales (and the Wallabies) as they prepared for that epic World Cup semi-final against South Africa at Twickenham. The Springboks had never lost a World Cup match.
The fax read “There’s only one thing better than beating the Springboks and that is tieing with them and then beating them on a count back. Don’t make it too easy, tease them and then nail them in the dying minutes just to show them who the greatest country in the world is !”
And that is exactly what happened – in extra time – when Steve Larkham nailed that magic field goal – a 48 metre stunner.
