As we gear up for the blockbuster Wallabies vs British & Irish Lions series this Saturday, it’s a perfect time to remember the proud legacy of our Ashgrove Old Boys on this famous stage.

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί In 2001, John Eales (Class of ’87) led Australia to their first and only series win over the Lions, with fellow Ashgrovian Dan Herbert (Class of ’91) playing a key role in that historic victory. Eales remains the only Wallaby captain to have raised the Tom Richards Cup against the Lions.

🐻 Going back to 1971, Ashgrove legends Barry Honan (Class of ’64), Alex Pope (Class of ’61), and David L’Estrange (Class of ’66) (as reserve) proudly represented Queensland, helping the Reds defeat the mighty Lions 15-11 at Ballymore β€” a famous chapter in QLD Rugby history.

With the Lions returning to our shores, we look forward to seeing who will write the next chapter in this storied rivalry. πŸ†

Given the depth of our rich history of providing elite rugby players, we somehow missed two Old Boys who have tasted victory against the BI Lions! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Mick Barry (1960) was part of the Qld Team that beat the Lions at Ballymore in 1971

And how could we forget our current Director of Rugby and 1st XV Coach, Richard Graham who played fullback for Australia A in 2001 in Gosford – a 28-25 victory for Australia A!
