Marist College Ashgrove celebrates the life of Sir Julius Chan.
Sir Julius was a student at Marist College Ashgrove between 1954 and 1958 and commenced a three-generation legacy at Marist with his sons and grandsons attending the College.
Sir Julius Chan is recognised as one of the founding fathers of Papua New Guinea serving as Prime Minister on two occasions from 1980 to 1982 and 1994 to 1997 making him one of PNG’s longest-serving politicians. An influential figure, Sir Julius had a remarkable career spanning almost fifty years.
Sir Julius’ legacy is one of leadership, dedication, and unwavering service to his country, Papua New Guinea. As a public servant, he held numerous key positions, including Prime Minister, and worked tirelessly to ensure a brighter future for his people. His commitment to justice, equality, and progress resonates far beyond the political sphere and leaves a lasting mark on the nation he loved.
As we reflect on his remarkable life, we remember the profound impact Sir Julius had on our Marist Family, Papua New Guinea and the world at large. Our thoughts are with his family and all those whose lives he touched.
We are honoured that Sir Julius visited the College last year to address our students and share memories about his time at Marist and how it prepared him to lead Papua New Guinea. Marist feels very proud to have had Sir Julius as an Old Boy.
It was with great pride that Sir Julius Chan once commented, “I am an Old Boy of Ashgrove and a Prime Minister. Without the first, I very much doubt whether I could ever have become the second.” SIr Julus Chan (1958).
May our loving God with Mary our good mother and St Marcellin Champagnat welcome Sir Julius home.
